What is Gabapentin is used for:

Gabapentin is used to help control partial seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. It is also prescribed to relieve nerve pain following shingles in adults. The Horizant brand of Gabapentin can be used to treat restless legs syndrome as well.

How to use Gabapentin:

Before using Gabapentin, be sure to consult your doctor and consider the risks of taking the medicine. This is a decision you and your doctor will make.

Consider the following before using Gabapentin:


Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Gabapentin or any other medicines. You should also make your physician aware of any other types of allergies, such as foods, allergies to dyes, preservatives, or animals.


There is no evidence that suggests there are pediatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of Gabapentin for treating partial seizures in children. However, children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this Gabapentin, especially mental mood and behavior changes such as hostility, problems concentrating, restlessness.


There is no evidence that demonstrates a geriatric-specific problem that would limit the usefulness Gabapentin in the elderly. However, older patients are more likely to have certain unwanted effects.

Instructions for use:

Use Gabapentin as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Gabapentin is taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor.
  • To minimize side effects, take the very first dose at bedtime.
  • If you are taking this medication 3 times a day to control seizures, do not let more than 12 hours pass between doses because your seizures may increase.
  • If you missed a dose take one as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this case wait until to take your next dose at the regular time.
  • Do not take an extra dose to make up for a mixed one.
  • Avoid taking an antacid within 2 hours before or after you take Gabapentin, as antacids make it harder for your body to absorb Gabapentin.
  • Store the medication is a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture and direct light.

Gabapentin Side Effects:

Side effects can exist in all medicines, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. If any of these common side effects persist or become worrisome, be sure to discuss them with your doctor.

Gabapentin Warnings:

Gabapentin passes into breast milk. Because of the possible risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Proper storage of Gabapentin:

Gabapentin should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 to 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Gabapentin out of the reach of children and away from pets.
