With every year that passes, more and more brand drug patent expirations occur. This year is no different. Some major drugs, like Lyrica, Spiriva, and Symbicort, will all lose some patent protections in 2018, paving the way for generic alternatives and lower prices.

The patents for medications typically last for around 20 years after the initial application date. Patents protection can vary by how the drug is marketed. For example, a drug may lose its patent protection for certain treatments, but may maintain it for a longer period of time, when it relates to other treatments.

Patent expiration date: January 30, 2018

Generic name: Hydroxyprogesterone

Patent expiration date: February 3, 2018

Makena is a manmade form of a female hormone called progesterone. It is used to lower the risk of premature birth in women who have already had one premature baby. The drug cannot stop premature labor when it has already begun.


Generic name: Cinacalcet

Patent expiration date: March 8, 2018

Used to treat hyperparathyroidism, Sensipar decreases levels of parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphorous in the body. People who are on long-term dialysis for kidney disease are prescribed this medication.


Generic name: Dofetilide

Patent expiration date: October 9, 2018

Tikosyn is a heart rhythm medicine, used to treat abnormal heartbeats. It is called an anti-arrhythmic. The medication is used to keep the heart beating normally in people with certain heart rhythm disorders of the atrium. It is also used in people with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.


Generic name: Vardenafil

Patent expiration date: October 31, 2018

A medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction, Levitra relaxes muscles found in the walls of blood vessels and increases blood flow to certain areas of the body. It may also be used for other purposes than this.


Generic name: Solifenacin

Patent expiration date: November 19, 2018

Vesicare is used to reduce muscle spasms of the bladder and urinary tract. It is used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder. It may be used for other purposes, other than this.


Generic name: Dabigatran

Patent expiration date: November 20, 2018

Pradaxa is used to help prevent the formation of blood clots. It’s a thrombin inhibitor, or anticoagulant. The medication is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people who have a medical condition called atrial fibrillation.


Generic name: Budesonide/formoterol

Patent expiration date: Nov. 11, 2018

In people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, Symbicort is used to prevent bronchospasms. Symbicort contains combinations of budesonide and formoterol. Budesonide is a steroid, used to reduce inflammation in the body, whereas formoterol improves breathing, by relaxing muscles in the airways.
