Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to fight bacteria in the body.


Clarithromycin is used for:

Clarithromycin is used to treat bacterial infections that affect the respiratory system and skin. It can also be used in combination with other medications to treat Heliobacter Pylori caused stomach ulcers.


How to use Clarithromycin:

Before using Clarithromycin, be sure to consult your doctor and consider the risks of taking the medicine. This is a decision you and your doctor will make.

Consider the following before using Clarithromycin:

Allergies

Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Before taking Clarithromycin, tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other allergies you may have to thing such as foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals.

Pediatric

Evidence of safety and efficacy regarding the effects of Clarithromycin have not yet been established in children younger than 6 months of age to treat bacterial infections. Safety and efficacy have not yet been established in children younger than 20 months of age to treat Mycobacterium avium complex.

Geriatric

There is no evidence to suggest that there are any geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of Clarithromycin in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more susceptible to age-related kidney and heart rhythm problems, which may affect the prescribed dosage.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

No adequate studies have been done to establish safety and efficacy of using Clarithromycin during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while using this medicine. Clarithromycin passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks and benefits of using this medication while breast feeding before using.

Other Medical Issues

Talk to your doctor before taking Clarithromycin if you have any of the following medical issues:

  • Liver Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Myasthenia Gravis

Instructions for use:

Use Clarithromycin as directed by your doctor. Follow the directions on the prescription label.

  • Clarithromycin is taken by mouth, with or without food.
  • Do not miss any doses of this medication. To clear up your infection completely, take the full course of prescribed medication. Keep taking til completed, even if you feel well.
  • If you are also taking Zidovudine, do not take it within two hours before or after clarithromycin.
  • If you miss a dose of Clarithromycin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
  • Ask your doctor if you have any questions about how to use Clarithromycin.

Side effects can exist in all medicines, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. If any of these common side effects persists or become worrisome, be sure to discuss them with your doctor.

Major Side Effects

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects when taking Clarithromycin.

  • Signs of an allergic reaction including: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat.
  • Bloody or watery diarrhea
  • Painful or little to no urination
  • Shortness of breath

Clarithromycin Warnings:

Before taking Clarithromycin discuss any allergies you may have medication wise, or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients which could possibly cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, before taking Clarithromycin. Inform them especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, Myasthenia Gravis.

Clarithromycin can impact the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) and cause it to not work as well. Do not have any immunizations/vaccinations while using this medication unless instructed by your doctor.

There is a possibility that older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, especially hearing loss and QT prolongation (heart rhythm issues).

Do not use Clarithromycin while pregnant unless instructed to do so by your doctor. If you are pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor right away so you can discuss if Clarithromycin usage is recommended for you during pregnancy.

Clarithromycin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding while taking Clarithromycin.

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center, or emergency room immediately.

Proper storage of Clarithromycin:

Clarithromycin should be store at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 to 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Store in a close container. Keep Clarithromycin out of the reach of children and away from pets.
